Layout Designer

The Layout Designer will design, modify, extend and prepare 2D and 3D printed collateral materials in line with established brand standards, direction or existing examples. They must meet or exceed the client’s and agency’s objectives in a manner consistent with Periscope’s mission, objectives and values, resulting in a profit for the agency.



Pre-Design (Project Understanding)

  • Is aware of new cultural trends and professional design conversations/issues
  • Become an expert in the client’s business, including business goals and audiences, objectives, products, trends, category’s visual language, etc.
  • Clearly understand project’s design parameters, including engineering, printing, systemization, communication, integration, marketing, financial and legal
  • Clearly understand project’s design criteria
  • Anticipate project difficulties or sticking points

Design (Creative Adaptation and Extension)

  • Shoulder responsibility and project ownership
  • Generate varied and diverse professional design layouts inside the project’s boundaries
  • Apply a refined and professional-level design eye to layout
  • Adapt and extend designs from one context to another
  • Seek appropriate approvals and “buy-in” from lead creatives and account services
  • Test solutions through physical printouts and mock-ups
  • Analyze generated solutions objectively
  • Align design decisions with strategy and objectives of the company/client organization
  • Enable convergence on final design decisions
  • Implement aesthetics/design iconography and design language
  • Create and manage use of artwork, either purchased or created
  • Ensure system and brand compatibility
  • Consider environmental sustainability
  • Assist in creation of integrated creative presentations/decks for client review
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of new business “pitches” as requested by manager

Pre-Production (Execution)

  • Maintain production-friendly project file structure
  • Construct and hand-off production and printer-ready keylines
  • Review and approve production proofs


  • Solicit and spend the appropriate amount of design support hours
  • Keep account team and Creative Directors informed on progress, hours spent, scope and challenges
  • Record expenses and billable time completely and accurately on a weekly basis
  • Adhere to Periscope policies and procedures as outlined in the Periscope Handbook
  • Maintain high level of professionalism in all internal and external communications, including email and voicemail correspondence
  • Communicate workload and availability accurately
  • Maintain confidential treatment of proprietary client information

  • Practical understanding of color application across three-color spaces (additive, subtractive and match)
  • Professional-level Mac-based proficiency with the latest version of: font management software; Web browsing software and file types, FTP transfers, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge and Acrobat) and Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word and Excel)
  • Working knowledge of 3D rendering tools and concepts, including applied perspective, floor plans, elevations, sections, 3-view third-angle orthographic projections, wireframes, skinning, axonometric drawings etc.
  • Proficient in file layout and keylining
  • Working knowledge of high-end retouching, pre-press and proofing
  • Working knowledge of printing methods, including sheet and web feed offset lithography, flexography digital, on-demand and screen
  • Working knowledge of printing tactics, including scoring, folding, imposition, embossing, varnishing and use of metallics
  • Awareness and understanding of paper and other printable substrates
  • Awareness of professional photographic techniques, concepts, practices and vocabulary
  • Awareness of both art history and design history



  • A portfolio demonstrating layout proficiency, sound spatial awareness and design flair
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school
  • 1–2 years of professional design and production
